Having an active mind and a vivid imagination can lead to some interesting adventures. Growing up, our home was TV-free, and it wasn’t until all four of us siblings moved out that my parents finally got one. This environment pushed me to get creative and explore new ideas. One of my most memorable projects happened about sixty years ago outside the shed Dad built behind the house. It was a place filled with mystery and a bit of fear.
One day, I decided to craft a homemade blow dart. I found a piece of lead pipe and a spoke from a broken bike. After some careful sanding the dart was pin-prick sharp. I attached a cork and used motor oil to seal and make slippery the shaft. With my two brothers watching, I took aim from about 25 feet away and let it fly. WHOOSH! THUNK! The sound of the dart shooting through the air and hitting the target was thrilling. Of course, realizing the danger of my creation led to a serious talk with my parents later. It was a wild experience, for sure!
