After several years wrestling with the limitations of inferior type on my rented IBM Composer, I finally took the plunge and purchased my very first phototypesetting system: a Compugraphic machine, which you can see pictured above. This purchase was more than just an upgrade; it shifted my focus entirely from graphic design to the fascinating but frustrating world of typesetting. It was an arduous detour that spanned four generations of machines over a remarkable twenty-year journey.
I still vividly remember my first “official” job in typesetting. Armed with nothing but press-on type, I crafted a line of text that adorned the bottom of a letterhead. The printer was astounded, claiming he couldn’t believe it was done by hand! My secret? A simple Pyrex glass baking pan and a lamp, its shade removed, serving as my makeshift light table.
Eventually, I experienced immense relief in leaving behind the complexities of that era and returning to a more straightforward computer-based design implementation. And here I am, still passionately immersed in this art form fifty years later!
