BEE-WARE!

2–3 minutes

Consider a captivating tale of a boy with bees. His fascination outweighs his fear. The fear of getting stung. Imagine a young lad, knee-deep in a blooming bounty of orange daisies, his eyes wide with wonder as he clutches a simple glass jar. Inside? Not just any captured critter, but a buzzing bee, hovering mid-flight like it’s deciding whether to dive in or dash. The boy’s face is a mix of mischief, marvel, and misgivings—a pure, compelling curiosity in action. His bravery seems boundless as adventure trumps trauma.

Adults could learn a lesson from this pint-sized pioneer! Just as the boy fearlessly finds the bee, we should approach life’s challenges with the same courage. Boys like this tike dive into the beehive of life with boundless bravery, chasing the thrill with little thought to the sting. Meanwhile, we grown-ups often hover on the hive’s edge, paralyzed by ‘what-ifs.’ What if we get stung by failure? What if our dreams drown? Our fears swarm like horrid hornets, keeping us from the nectar of new beginnings.

This boy-bee bond resonates with biblical reminders of youthful exploits that expose adult apprehensions. Young David, the shepherd boy who faced Goliath with faith-fueled fervor, not fear. 1 Samuel 17:37 declares, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” David didn’t dwell on the giant’s spear; he sprang forward, slinging stones with the same spirited spunk as our bee-boy.

Or consider Proverbs 6:6-8, urging us to observe the ant (a close cousin to the bee in diligence): “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Bees, too, toil tirelessly, teaching us to venture, gather, and build hives of hope despite the hazards.

Let’s not forget Joshua, that bold boundary-crosser, commanded in Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Just as boys bound into bee-filled fields, we’re called to cross into unknown territories, trusting that God’s presence precedes us, providing us with a sense of security and reassurance.

So, as we watch this whimsical wanderer weigh his winged wonder, a poignant question stings the soul:

What buzzing fears are holding you back from catching the sweet adventures God has jarred just for you?

Dear Heavenly Father, amid life’s buzzing busyness, help us trade fear for fascination. Like the boy with his bee, grant us the courage to chase Your calls without counting the stings. May we venture boldly, backed by Your boundless protection, and find the honey of Your promises in every pursuit. Amen.
